Blog 11 (12): Democracy through the decades.

There are many differences between politics in the times of my parents and grandparents, and the politics that are seen in my current generation. One of the glaring differences that has become a growing medium is for expression to be seen on the internet. Not only are newspapers converting their stories to a more digital platform, but politicians can now post ad campaigns, that used to be limited to television and radio, to websites like youtube and facebook. This not only opens up the campaigning to a broader audience, but more importantly, to the youth vote which has been lacking in prior decades. An English website, has an article titled, The Internet and Politics, it talks about how the internet has increased awareness about certain political issues, both in America and abroad.

As far as I’m concerned, the internet is the main difference between the democratic citizenship involvement of my parents and grandparents, and myself. I also feel that party issues have changed as well. Not only the pro-choice, pro-life stances, but the increased acceptance of gay couples in society. This heightened gay acceptance has led to the party differences when it comes to gay marriage. In general, the issues and the mediums that are used on a daily basis have changed so I, personally, believe that yes, being a democratic citizen in 2010 has changed in a significant way since the days of my parents and grandparents.
